We recently created our own PH testing indicator using red cabbage. To do so we chopped a quarter of a red cabbage and placed in a saucepan with cold water. Once boiling we let it simmer for five minutes then left to cool. Once cool we poured through a sieve into a couple of clean jars. We went on to test the PH of a few household substances namely lemon, lime, salt, vinegar and washing up liquid. In order to test we filled two test tubes half full with the indicator, we kept one as the control and added some substance to the other testtube and compared. Acids will turn the indicator pink or red, an alkali will turn blue whilst if neutral the colour will remain the same.
